Hand holding pen ready to 'tick the box' for Gift Aid Awareness Day

Get Ready For Gift Aid Awareness Day 2025

Gift Aid Awareness Day is taking place on Thursday 9th October 2025! The annual event, created by Charity Finance Group, aims to raise awareness around the importance of Gift Aid: what it is, which donors qualify, and how charities benefit, so many of us can #TickTheBox with confidence!

What Is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a tax relief scheme issued by the UK Government that enables charities to reclaim the tax paid on donations made by UK taxpayers. Put simply, charities can claim an extra 25p for every £1 given by a UK taxpayer. Considering there are 31.6 million taxpayers in the UK, with 48% donating to charity – that’s a lot of additional support!

According to HMRC’s UK charity tax relief statistics, more than 67,000 organisations are signed up to receive Gift Aid. In fact, the amount of Gift Aid claimed has increased by 7% to £1.7 billion, showing just how beneficial ‘ticking the box’ can be.

However, according to Charity Finance Group (CFG), around £560 million in Gift Aid goes unclaimed every year. This means many eligible taxpayers are not ‘ticking the box’ for Gift Aid when they make their donations. This figure could go a long way to improving the reach of services offered by charities – especially as they continue to be affected by the cost of living crisis. Gift Aid Awareness Day aims to change this – informing donors of the benefits of gift aid, and ensuring they ‘tick the box’ whenever they donate!

How To Celebrate Gift Aid Awareness Day

The best way to prepare for Gift Aid Awareness Day is to plan a social media or print campaign – or both!

On social media, be sure to use the hashtag #TickTheBox on Thursday 9th October 2025. This will help boost the visibility of your social media posts, and align them with other charities celebrating one the day. You can access CFG’s Free Social Media Toolkit to download pre-made assets for social media, or create your own.

In charity retail stores, you can display posters or hand out leaflets explaining what Gift Aid is, and why it benefits your charity.

And for all UK citizens, you can write a letter to your local MP, asking them to support the campaign. There is a draft letter included in CFG’s Toolkit to get you started.

Be Sure To #TickTheBox

Finally, in the run-up to Gift Aid Awareness Day, be sure to start using the #TickTheBox hashtag, and preparing more educational materials that can be used year-round. Every penny helps!
